Potty Learning Tips
My eight-week-old used the potty for the first time today
With the warm weather and three-day weekend upon us, I thought I’d share some potty learning tips and tricks that were helpful for us in the past. If you’re currently in the thick of it or anticipating the time to come, I hope this is valuable info for you.
Infant Potty Learning
I felt inspired to write this post today of all days because my two-month-old peed in his potty for the very first time!
Before the invention of disposable diapers in the 1940s, infant potty learning was actually the norm. It should come as no surprise to learn that pediatricians were incentivized and studies were paid for by diaper manufacturers to encourage longer use of diapers than historically appropriate.
When my daughter was eight weeks old we started a very chill version of Elimination Communication with no stress on me, no expectations placed on her. When I noticed a cue, and it was convenient for me, I placed her on the potty. We used diapers simultaneously.
As she got older, she started resisting her little potty. We followed her lead and backed off from EC. I do however feel like the early introduction to the potty, the terminology and body awareness, made it easier for her to potty learn as a toddler. I’m looking forward to practicing EC again with my son. I share more on this topic in my book Growing Together.
OK… now back to toddler tips:
